Question I have the following questions about Hadith: 1. Are all the Hadiths in Bukhari and Muslim sahih li dhatihi or are there also some sahih li ghayrihi narrations? Please provide example if there are any? For a Hadith to be classed as sahih li ghayrihi, does the supporting narration need to have the exact words or just the same meaning? If it just needs the same meaning, will it also include one part of a lengthy narration supporting a small narration? There are also Sahih li ghayrihi Hadiths in Bukhari and Muslim. See two examples in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 986 and Hadith: 1008-1009 with Fathul Bari.

For the supporting narration to have the same meaning is sufficient, even if the support is found in a lengthy narration. Hadith went through various stages in its process of compilation. The following are some points about the main eras of recording and compiling the Prophetic traditions. Era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) During the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there was no pressing need to write down all his statements or to record his actions because he was present and could be consulted at any time. As a matter of fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself – as Muslim reports in his Sahih – made a general prohibition against writing down his statements which were other than the Qur`an itself.
This was to prevent the possibility of mixing up the Qur`an with his own words during the era of revelation. Consequently, the greatest stress regarding writing was placed on recording the Qur`anic verses. However, there are many authentic narrations collected by the scholars of Hadith that prove that hadiths were recorded in writing even during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). For example, `Abdullah ibn `Amr said, “I used to write everything which I heard from the Messenger of Allah with the intention of memorizing it. However, some Quraishites forbade me from doing so saying, “Do you write everything that you hear from him, while the Messenger of Allah is a human being who speaks in anger and pleasure?” So I stopped writing, and mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He pointed with his finger to his mouth and said, “Write! By Him in whose hand is my soul, only truth comes out from it.” (Abu Dawud) Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “When Makkah was liberated, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and gave a sermon [ Abu Hurairah then mentioned the sermon].
A man from Yemen, called Abu Shaah got up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Write it down for me.” The Messenger of Allah replied, “Write it for Abu Shaah.” (Abu Dawud) Al-Waleed asked Abu `Amr, “What are they writing?” He replied, “The sermon that he heard that day.” (Abu Dawud) Abu Qabeel said: “We were with `Abdullah ibn `Amr ibn Al-`Aas and he was asked which city would be conquered first, Constantinople or Rome?

So `Abdullah called for a sealed trunk, and he said, “Take the book out from it.” Then `Abdullah said, “While we were with the Messenger of Allah writing, The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked, “Which city will be conquered first, Constantinople or Rome?” So Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The city of Heracilius will be conquered first,” meaning Constantinople.” (Ahmad, Ad-Daaramee, and Al-Haakim) 2. The Era of the Companions of the Prophet After the death of the Prophet his sayings and actions took of a new importance because he was no longer there to consult when problems arose. The practice of narration on a large scale started during this period.
