Out of box experience was initially very good, the initial setup is extremely simple and extremely fast thanks primarily to the SSD. Things got frustrating when I naively launched Windows Update, which did exactly nothing for 2 hours. At that point it was time to start Googling and discover that Microsoft has made changes to Windows Update that effectively break the original Windows Update client that comes shipped with the install image this refurbisher uses.

I don't blame the refurbisher so much as I blame Microsoft, but this is the primary reason I'm deducting a star. At any rate, if you buy any refurbished computer that comes with Windows 7, you'll want to take a look at the following article that bailed me out and got these systems up to date with hotfixes and a working Windows Update:[.] Pro-Tip: be sure to create Restore Points after each step of the Plugable directions just in case, so that you have a known good point to fall back to should one of the MS updates break something along the way. After following the Plugable directions (took several hours owing to slow internet connection) I then went to HP's web site and downloaded and installed HP Support Assistant which will be used to manage the firmware for the laptop. It would have been nice if the refurbisher had preloaded this with their image - most people won't think to do this, believing that Windows Update will take care of this type of detail (hint: probably not competently if at all). The HP Support Assistant identified critical BIOS and HD Sound firmware updates, as well as half a dozen other highly recommended updates for other components.
