Microsoft FrontPage 1. Introduction Microsoft FrontPage is a full featured HTML editor. A Web site is a group of HTML pages and graphics that are interconnected with hyperlinks. A FrontPage Web site is a site created in FrontPage. It contains Web pages graphics, documents, multimedia. With Expression Web you can still use the FPSE to publish like you did in Frontpage - you set up the connection settings the same way, specify the HTTP address etc. But, yes, you're correct the FPSE are not necessary; you can publish using FTP (within EW) or use a third party FTP - this hasn't changed, you could use FTP in Frontpage also.

If you have FP Ext already installed, you can use them; but if not, ignore them, and use FTP (or maybe just uninstall them if you have no left-over features of FP that still use them besides the publishing. It sounds like you never really used the extensions except for publishing (?). Andrew M 'Nothing spoils numbers faster than arithmetic!'

FrontPage forms are an example. And, there are FP features that don't require FP extensions, yet which are not supported by EW. It's a different issue, but still, you'll need to know which is which before simply dropping FP and opening your site with EW. [Shared borders comes to mind, and EW doesn't have a navigation view.]. But more importantly, Microsoft pulled support for FPSEs 7 years ago. As hosting companies upgrade their servers they can no longer run FPSEs on the new server OSes, so FPSEs are rapidly disappearing from the web. The upshot is, don't start using them now with EW.

You'll just have to switch to FTP in the near future anyway. Start using FTP now.

Frontpage

It's the standard means to publish (always has been). The Dalai Lama walks into a pizza shop and asks the guy behind the counter, 'Can you make me one with everything?' Hello, a company (RTR) implemeted the Frontpage Extensions now to work with II7.5 and W2008R2. We bought the Frontpage Extensions (they were free until II 7), because it is the easiest way to work with 3-5 people on the same website. The Frontpage extensions also check and rename all the links when you change a file. Just change the filename of a image. All the links will be updated automatically.

We run many big websites with the FPE, they work really fantastic - I do not know how to run them without it. I think a number of hosts are going to run RTR extensions just because of the huge number of FP created sites and the fact that they represent a good bit of revenue potential. Two of the hosts we use have already done so or are doing so. While I agree with Bill in principal and we have done away with dependancy on extensions in most cases I am also glad that RTR is making it possible for the non-pro crowd to get some breathing room while they migrate. In spite of the angst and loathing many have for Frontpage and FPSE's the fact remains that the product was used by so many people that millions of sites were made with it and it will take some time to move away from it. In some ways I liken this to an old car.
